Migrant workers symposium, day 2

  • Apr. 19th, 2007 at 8:46 PM
xmas
Today at the symposium on migrant workers, the International Labour Organisation recommended that immigrant workers should be able to change jobs and otherwise suggested that Qatari's sponsorship system violates human rights. This was not, apparently, an entirely popular statement, and the intriguing rejoinder was made that "the GCC people are the most civilised and treat their workers very well."

Meanwhile, a Bahraini government official said that the sponsorship system is going to change whether people like it or not, and Oman was held up as a successful example of Khaleejization.

I just Googled Khaleejization and am bummed to discover that I am not the first person to use the term. Sigh.

If you use the English spelling you'll be first!
"Khaleejisation"
