niqab
Quoth the Peninsula, an Arab couple was arrested for kissing on the Corniche. In their defense, they proved that they were married. However, the man is a Christian and the woman is a Muslim, so even though they are married (in their unspecified homeland), Qatar has refused to recognize their marriage certificate.

It strikes me that there must be an (albeit tiny) market for someone who can write pithily about these sorts of society faux-pas. A sort of Jane Austen of the middle east. And you may just be the person for the job... :-)

Look at the "Bright Side"
At least they are NOT [presently] being prosecuted / persecuted for their inter-faith marriage. I'm sure there are plenty of places that would just love to make a case of that as well.

What I don't get is IF the law is so strict, how come married couples are presumably permitted to kiss in public. I mean, does the police ask the couple to produce a "marriage certificate", every time they see some PDA, and let them go if have one? "Oh you're married? Do carry on." ;-)

Re: Look at the "Bright Side"
I don't know that they're permitted to kiss in public, but the punishment would presumably be significantly less severe.

That question aside, though, I don't know what all the repercussions of this decision will be, though. They may well be open to prosecution for living together without being married, now.

Isn't it against law for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man as he is the head of the household? I know it happens in other countries but I'd be surprised if it happened in the Gulf

That's exactly the point. It is against the law for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man - of course only in the countries where Sharia is law. And it has more to do with the kids who will be Christian than with the man being the head of household. Therefore this couple is not married while in Sharia ruled land. Weird.

It is well-known fact that inter-religion marriages (like their case) is acceptable in countries like Lebanon, Egypt, Israel & Iraq (The SADDAM years). The court has no right to decline their marriage certificate. They can easily fight the verdict, if they get a good lawyer.I think the morons at courts doesn't know that a large percentage of married couples from Levant community living in Doha are of inter-religion marriages (Christians, druze & shi'a).

Hi there -

I added you to my friendslist - I recently applied for a position at VCUQatar in Doha. I hope that you don't mind me lurking a bit - I was hoping to get an 'insider perspective' on what life was like in Qatar. Thanks!
