This is one of those things I can't work out whether or not to talk about on Livejournal. I'm friends-protecting it for now.

Last night we got an e-mail from a colleague telling us that one of our students, Fahad Al-Jefairi, was killed yesterday in a car accident in Saudi. He was buried today.

I didn't know him hugely well, except that in the last few weeks we'd gotten into some interesting conversations online on Qatarliving and here on my blog. On Friday I was all excited because, in a religious debate, he cited the allegory of the rings from Nathan the Wise -- a play our students got to see broadcast live from the Pittsburgh campus. I was going to write back, but didn't. It's just weird to think that now I can't. (Boy, how self-centered a reaction is that?)

Please keep the Al-Jefairi family in your thoughts, and also our students. They're a tight-knit group, and the loss of their colleague has got to be pretty rough.

إنا لله و إنا إليه راجعون
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
We belong to God, and to God we will return.

I had hoped that it wasn't true when I heard.

I'm pretty bummed.

Yeah. Me too. Somehow it doesn't seem real. But I guess that's always how it is.

I'm horribly sorry to hear about your student. So young, gone in an instant. It could happen to anyone.

I couldn't find the ring allegory in that thread. Can you give me a search term?

Search for "there is once."

The original allegory -- or at least an 1830 translation of the original, which was written in German in 1779 -- can be read here.

The CMU production was actually a more modern (and, I think, nicer) translation, but being still copyrighted it's not available online.

The phrase "there is once" does not appear in the current version of the link that you provide.

OH! I'm viewing it while logged in, and I've tweaked my settings to show the entire conversation on one page. I imagine you'd have to either do the same or page through a bit.

Thanks. Right now his comment is on page 3.

Yes I remember it because a friend from Qatar Living called me in the middle of the night crying.. I didn't know Fahad myself but from what I heard he was a really nice person who made his country proud. This is just so sad.

Oh, yikes. :-( I didn't know anyone else at Qatar Living knew him in real life. I briefly considered posting something there about his death but decided that would be too weird.
