DCMF calls for repeal of 1979 Press Law

Ever since posting a fortnight ago about the freedom of speech/press laws in Doha, I've felt some doubt about whether it can really be true that nobody's ever bothered to repeal the 1979 Press and Publication Law. After ll, the Emir proclaimed press freedom in 1995; how could he have neglected to repeal the law that makes it illegal to criticize him, damage anyone's reputation, "diffuse rancor," and so on?

But, if he had, probably the Doha Center for Media Freedom wouldn't still be calling for its repeal.

I love the gentle phrasing of: "Without trying to accuse the legislators in Qatar, they keep suggesting media laws that are not reflective of the aspirations of the stakeholders."
