In, like, a week. Eek.

I'm ridiculously excited.

Questions for Pittsburghy people:
  1. Do you know anyone who's subletting for the summer? We're looking for somewhere to stay while we house-hunt (preferably furnished, and definitely in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside or Oakland).
  2. Comcast or Verizon FiOS? Or are there other options?
  3. Do you have any recommendations for cell phone providers/plans/phones? I was all excited about getting an Android, but I had no idea mobile telephony was so freakishly expensive in the US. I hereby take back all the mean things I've said about QTel.
  4. In the extremely unlikely case that you have spawned young in Pittsburgh: Magee or West Penn?

Edit: In response to several questions -- it looks like Justin will have a couple job options in Pittsburgh, so we don't actually know where he'll be working yet.

Hey, awesome!

I admit it is a bit expensive, but I have been happy with my new droid phone so far.

Neat! Do you need any logistic help with arrival on the Pittsburgh end?

Also, I've been really happy with FiOS.

In addition: Are you and J interested in borrowing a car for the summer? I'm looking to foist mine off on someone while I'm in Japan.

srsly? That's very awesome of you! We'd be very interested, assuming we could work out a mutually agreeable arrangement about paying you for wear and tear and stuff.

What dates are you away?

Data plans are kind of expensive in, uh, most of the world. I don't think the US is so freakish relative to other places. -asdf

I didn't mean DATA plans were expensive, I meant NORMAL plans were expensive. I've only ever owned a cell phone in Qatar, so that's all I can compare to. J's last monthly bill was QR44 ($12). Mine was perhaps twice that, since I SMS a lot.

Now I'm thinking of doing something like the T-Mobile pay-as-you-go plan.

I use TMobile, and it's actually cheaper than any other smartphone orovider.

Also: West Penn. Overall, people in the West Penn system are much less disgruntled by their corporate behemoth than are people in UPMC. Magee residents are overworked, miserable, and bitchy.

On #2, I recommend Speakeasy DSL - they're very geek-friendly and the DSL-sans-phone-service thing works out pretty well.

I'm paying less for FiOS than I payed for Speakeasy, and getting more reliable service.

Yay! It will be great to see you guys!

1. I may have something for you, will contact you via other channels.
2. FiOS, if possible. I just switched recently when it became available in Squill. I have a data-only 25 symmetric plan for about $70 a month. Comcast pissed me off way too many times.
3. We just have iPhones, so not really.
4. I will ask some of my other friends on this one. I think I've heard good things about Magee though.

4. "The answer to that is "it depends". If it's a high-risk pregnancy, or you want to use midwives but also have the mental security of being in a hospital, magee. If you want to potentially get the awesome male lactation consultant, west penn." The Midwife center in the strip is another option.

"The male lactation consultant is supposedly the best in Pittsburgh."
"The male lactation consultant was super fabulous. much better than the two female lactation consultants i talked to. and both magee and west penn have level III NICUs."
"So neither hopsital is really better, as far as i can tell. better is really more about your doctor."

Yay for you! :)

...You should live in Bloomfield/Friendship. :)

We are several blocks from each of the new Children's Hospital and West Penn, which seems like it would be pretty convenient for childcaring, but of course I do not actually know that for sure.

I think you should live in Squirrel Hill, just 'cause it sounds cute.

/never been to Pittsburgh in my life

And yay for you! You sound very happy about the move. Not enough rain in Doha?

I can say from experience, after a few years, it gets trying.
May. 20th, 2010 06:03 pm (UTC)
Addendum: come sublet in my house! I am sending you an email (to the lj address) with details.

I would have thought the quote would be "Pittsburgh is kind of like Newark without the toxic waste"---hey-OH!
